JUST RIDE IT, LAH!

In recent times, oBike and other bicycle rental services are taking Singapore by storm. For some, it is an alternative form of transport over shorter distances that will save precious time or money.

How much money or time can we save if we ride a bike instead of taking a train?

Let’s say you’re travelling from Toa Payoh to Somerset, which is 4.9 km away, with the time required and cost of taking the train at 15 min and $0.97 respectively. We’ll assume that the cost of renting a bike is $0.50 per 15 min.

Solution

To find out how long it’ll take you to cycle to your destination, you need to know your average cycling speed.

Speed

Speed = Distance travelledTime taken

You can find your average speed by cycling a fixed distance over 5 min. Assume you found it to be 15.3 km/h.

Therefore, the time taken for you to cycle to your destination
= DistanceSpeed
= 4.915.3
≈ 0.32 h
= (0.32 x 60) min
= 19.2 min

Cycling to your destination will thus take you an additional time of
19.2 – 15 = 4.2 min

The cost of renting a bike is $0.50 per 15 min. Since it takes us 19.2 min to cycle to our destination, we will need
2 x $0.50 = $1

Therefore, cycling to your destination will cost you an additional
$1 – $0.97 = $0.03

We can now conclude that cycling will cost you an additional small sum of $0.03, and take an extra 4.2 min, which does not amount to much of a difference – but hey, it’s exercise!

Use the steps above to find out if cycling to your destination will save you time or money, and be worth it for you!
