Hunting for bunting

Happy birthday, Singapore! It’s time for our neighbourhoods to be decked in a sea of red and white again, with flags hung and buntings strung from our iconic HDB flats.

But how long should the bunting be if we want to hang it as shown above? Assume that the string is pulled taut.

All we have to know is 2 things:
  • The height of the building level we are hanging the bunting from.
  • The horizontal distance between the building and the spot where the bunting is anchored.

Pythagoras' Theorem

Pythagoras’ Theorem states that for any right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

In other words, a2 + b2 = c2

If the height of the 4th floor is 12m, and the horizontal distance is 8m,

c2= a2 + b2
= 122 + 82
= 144 + 64
= 208
c= √ 208
≈ 14.42m

So, for each line of bunting, your string needs to be 14.42m. Now, go get your flags ready, and show Singapore some love!
